Introducing: The Homewood Cemetery Truffle Times Sculpture Exposition

The Homewood Cemetery is excited to introduce the first collection of the "Truffle Times Sculpture Exposition."

Earlier this year a small group from around the region assembled at The Homewood Cemetery to create a garden of sorts. They were chainsaw artists who offered their time and talents to help produce The Truffle Times Public Sculpture Exposition.

Truffle Times is an art exhibit of oversized chainsaw sculpted mushrooms presented to showcase local artists, promote conservation, celebrate Pittsburgh's history, and raise money for The Homewood Cemetery Historical Fund. The mushrooms are made from felled cemetery trees that would have otherwise been mulched or used for firewood.

The concept of Truffle Times was inspired by the Carnegie Museums DinoMite Days, only it takes place at a community level. East End businesses, agencies, and individuals are asked to support the project by sponsoring mushrooms for display at their establishments. Truffle Times mushrooms will be mounted to Oak slabs at locations throughout the community, bearing a plaque with information about the project.

A committee selected designs from artists' submissions--some from as far away as Blair County. Each mushroom is uniquely crafted from Oak and other hardwood, hand-painted and stained, then weatherproofed for optional outdoor display. From the reclaimed trees to their hand-made plaques, the sculptures are made from 100% recycled materials.

The Homewood Cemetery located in the Pittsburgh’s East End provides public services such as history, art, and nature educational tours. There are also plans to open a public arboretum soon. Truffle Times will benefit the community, not only by supporting this historical institution but, by attracting consumers and tourists alike to the East End business district to view the one-of-a-kind art work.

Truffle Times is yet another perfect combination of art and history. Once home to the famous (and infamous) such as H.J. Heinz, R. B. Mellon, Henry Clay Frick, and George Westinghouse, Pittsburgh’s East End community is currently undergoing large-scale development. As it grows into the future, Truffle Times is a cool way of honoring its past.
